Spark Detection and Extinguishing

Spark Detection and Extinguishing

The spark detectors detect the minimum infrared rays and transmit them to the spark alarm unit. The extinguishing system is then switched on within milliseconds and extinguishing water is injected into the extinguishing line via special nozzles.

Spark Detection and Extinguishing

In pneumatic conveyor systems and mechanical conveyor systems that transport flammable materials, flying sparks can often cause fires or explosions.

Flying sparks are often caused by machine or material wear. The consequences are production interruptions, high property damage and danger to human life. To protect against and avoid these risks, systems must be monitored for flying sparks and protected by spark extinguishing systems.

The spark detectors recognise the minimal infrared rays and forward them to the spark detection system. The extinguishing system is then switched on within milliseconds and extinguishing water is injected into the extinguishing pipe via special nozzles. Flying sparks come into contact with this extinguishing mist and are reliably extinguished.

The minimum distance between a spark detector and the extinguishing device in an extinguishing system depends on the air velocity in the process pipe and the response time of the extinguishing system. The minimum distance in metres is calculated by multiplying the air velocity in m/s by a safety factor of up to 0.3 s (depending on the diameter of the distribution line). The safety factor determines the time between spark detection and the accumulation of fire extinguishing mist. During this time, an effective extinguishing water mist must be generated in the process pipework to safely extinguish the flying sparks. The following therefore applies in principle: The higher the process air velocity, the greater the distance between the spark detector and the fire extinguishing system. It is important to ensure that the extinguishing process always starts before the spark reaches the extinguishing point.

Spark Detection and Extinguishing Description

Safe control of flying sparks: spark extinguishing systems

Pneumatic conveying systems and mechanical conveying systems used in industrial plants can be very effective for transporting flammable materials. However, the flying sparks generated during these processes can pose a risk of fire or explosion. Spark extinguishing systems are used to minimise these risks and ensure safety.

Immediate detection with spark detectors: The system is equipped with spark detectors that can detect a minimum of infrared radiation to be effective in the transport of ions. However, sparks generated during these processes can be detected by the spark detectors. As soon as the detectors recognise a possible spark, they transmit this information to the spark alarm unit.

Fast and effective extinguishing process: In response to information from the alarm unit, the extinguishing system is activated within milliseconds. Extinguishing water is injected via special nozzles and flying sparks are safely extinguished.

Optimised distance and air velocity: The minimum distance between the spark detector and the extinguishing system is optimised depending on the air velocity in the process line and the reaction time of the system. This ensures a reliable spark extinguishing process.

Distance calculation with safety factor: The minimum distance is determined by multiplying the air velocity by a safety factor of up to 0.3 s. This safety factor determines the critical time between the detection of the spark and the triggering of the extinguishing mist.

Safe and efficient operation: This system aims to ensure safe and efficient operation by minimising production interruptions and safety risks in industrial plants.

Spark Detection and Extinguishing Areas of Use

Spark extinguishing systems are generally used in industrial plants, especially in areas where flammable materials are transported or processed. These systems are designed to reduce the risk of fire or explosion by preventing the uncontrolled spread of flames and sparks.

Transport and conveyor systems: Pneumatic conveyor systems are used in mechanical conveyor systems and similar material transport systems. They reduce the risk of fire by detecting and quickly extinguishing any sparks that may occur in these systems.

Processing of abrasive material: Used in areas where metal particles or other abrasive materials are processed. It is particularly important to control the sparks generated between metal particles.

Wood and wood processing companies: Used in wood processing companies to extinguish sparks generated during the processing of wood dust.

Chemical processing and production: Used in chemical plants where flammable chemicals are processed or manufactured. Controlling sparks from chemical reactions is important.

Flour and dusty environments: These systems can be used in dusty environments such as flour processing plants. They dampen sparks that can occur between dust particles.

Filter and extraction systems: Reduces the risk of fire due to sparks that can occur in the filters through use in dust collection and filter systems.

Spark Detection and Extinguishing Advantages

Fire and explosion protection: Spark extinguishing systems detect the development of flames or sparks and intervene quickly to reduce the risk of fire or explosion. This helps to minimise serious safety threats in industrial plants.

Fast response time: The systems react in a very short time after sparks or flames are detected. This fast response time ensures that a potential fire is brought under control and minimises potential damage.

Passive safety solution: Spark extinguishing systems offer a passive safety solution. They are based on a continuously operating automation system and require no human intervention, which ensures continuous protection.

Remote control and monitoring: Most spark extinguishing systems offer remote control and monitoring. This allows the facility manager to monitor the system status remotely, intervene if necessary and evaluate system performance.

System customisation: As the needs of each plant are different, spark extinguishing systems can be customised. They can be specially configured according to the business processes and risks of a particular industrial plant.

Plant and material protection: Spark extinguishing systems protect industrial plants and materials from the risk of fire or explosion. This increases the safety of investments within the plant.

Environmentally friendly: In most cases, spark extinguishing systems use environmentally friendly extinguishing agents. This ensures that they only have a minimal impact on the environment.

Compliance with industry standards: Spark extinguishing systems generally comply with industry standards and safety regulations. This helps the system to fulfil safety and inspection requirements.
