Isolation Valve

Isolation Valve

The purpose of explosion isolation is to protect interconnected or connected parts in a process and to prevent the spread of explosion.

Isolation Valve

The purpose of explosion decoupling is to protect interconnected parts in a process and prevent the propagation of explosions.

In real life, many closed volumes, silos and systems in processes are connected to each other by pipework, pneumatic conveyors or suction lines. When a dust explosion occurs, flames and rising pressure waves spread through these pipes and connections to other parts of the process. Pre-compression and fireball exacerbate the explosion in these interconnected volumes. The result is secondary explosions that can lead to even larger explosions and detonations.

An explosion protection system prevents the propagation of explosions and the occurrence of secondary explosions. This minimises the negative consequences of an explosion and protects the associated equipment.

Isolation Valve Description

Active and passive insulation systems

There are two types of explosion protection systems: active and passive insulation.

  • Passive insulation systems whose components react together with the explosion effect and prevent the spread of flames and pressure waves.
  • Active isolation systems are systems with detectors and sensors that continuously analyse the pressure situation and spark formation and trigger countermeasures.
  • The most important devices used in explosion protection systems can be listed as follows;

Passive

  • Non-return valve
  • Bidirectional non-return valve

Active

  • Chemical damping barrier
  • Fast valves
  • Damping valves

Isolation Valve Areas of Use

Passive insulation systems Areas of application:

Industrial plants: Passive shut-off valves are used in industrial plants to prevent the spread of explosions. The effects of explosions are limited by the use of passive shut-off systems in chemical plants, storage areas and similar industrial environments.

Chemical plants: In chemical plants where explosive or flammable substances are present, shut-off valves are activated in the event of an explosion to isolate the affected areas and prevent the explosion from spreading.

Active insulation systems Areas of application:

Oil and gas industry: Active shut-off valves are used to protect against explosion hazards in the oil and gas industry. If an explosion is detected, the valves close quickly and prevent the explosion from spreading to other areas.

Energy generation plants: Active shut-off valves in power plants, nuclear power plants and other energy generation plants help to control explosions.

Chemical and refinery plants: In chemical production plants and oil refineries, active shut-off valves are used in potentially explosive areas to increase plant safety.

Waste water treatment plants: In waste water treatment plants with a risk of explosion, active shut-off valves prevent environmental damage by isolating the affected areas in the event of an explosion.

Isolation Valve Advantages

Explosion protection: Shut-off valves provide an effective mechanism for controlling explosions. Active shut-off valves prevent the spread of the explosion by closing quickly at the moment the explosion is detected.

Personnel safety: The activation of shut-off valves in the event of an explosion increases the safety of employees and other people in the system. Controlling the pressure waves and flames caused by the explosion helps to prevent serious injuries.

Equipment protection: Shut-off valves protect the equipment in the system to prevent damage from explosions. This minimises damage to valuable equipment in the plant.

Environmental protection: Shut-off valves used in chemical and industrial plants prevent environmentally harmful substances from escaping in the event of an explosion. This offers an environmentally friendly approach by reducing the impact on the environment.

Production continuity: The containment of damage and fires caused by explosions increases production continuity. Correct operation of the shut-off valves in the plant helps to ensure that business processes can continue without interruption.

Industrial adaptability: Shut-off valves can be designed to adapt to different industrial sectors. This allows us to offer customised solutions for the needs of plants in different sectors.
